ST. LANDRY PARISH- This afternoon, a Trooper with Louisiana State Police Troop I was involved in a shooting on Interstate 49 near milepost 40, north of the Evangeline/ St. Landry Parish line.
The initial investigation by State Police Detectives indicates that at about 4:20 p.m., a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Deputy and a State Trooper were responding to a two vehicle crash on I-49 northbound near milepost 40. When the Deputy arrived at the scene 22-year-old Byron Simon of Ville Platte, began running toward him. Simon, who was not wearing any clothes, entered the Deputy’s vehicle and a struggle began. When the Trooper arrived a short time later, he observed Simon struggling with the Deputy and discharged his weapon. As the attempt to take Simon into custody continued, the Trooper fired his Taser hitting Simon. Simon was then taken into custody. Simon was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Simon was booked by Detectives into the St. Landry Parish Jail for attempted disarming of a peace officer, simple battery, obscenity, simple burglary of an emergency vehicle, battery on a police officer and four counts of resisting a police officer.
No one was injured by the gunfire.
This case remains under investigation.
