On the same day that Rita Jordan was murdered in Abbeville a year ago, another murder took place in Abbeville.

Late Friday night, at approximately 11:18 p.m., the Abbeville Police Department responded near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Schlessinger Streets for a complaint of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers located a male who was suffering from several gunshot wounds. Due to the gunshot victim’s conditioning worsening, the Abbeville police officers loaded the male subject into a patrol car and rushed him to Abbeville General Hospital.

The gunshot victim, 19-year-old Jovontae’ Charles, later died while being treated at Abbeville General Hospital.

Investigators were called to the scene and recovered several casings near the location of the victim. The officers processed the scene for evidence and obtained video from a local business.

At this time, the Abbeville Police Department searching for eye witnesses to the shooting which were observed on the video. Anyone with any information about this investigation is asked to contact the Abbeville Police Department at 337-893-2511.

Since this time last year, there have now been seven murders in Abbeville. The five other homicide cases that remain open in Abbeville are Theresa “Rita” Jordan, Paul Rice, three-month-old Jayla Broussard, Darrell Broussard Jr. and Kyle Trahan. Jordan was found stabbed multiple times in her home on April 26, 2012.
