The student, 17-year-old Charles Everette Benjamin Jr., was arrested just after noon by Lafayette police on a charge of battery of a schoolteacher. He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center but released later Thursday.
The teacher began experiencing bleeding after the altercation, and her condition is unknown, according to a sworn statement by police.
The conflict began as a teacher removed another student from her classroom to avoid a physical altercation and followed the student out into the hallway. After she left, Benjamin tried to open the door from within the classroom, according to the police statement.
The teacher told Benjamin to remain in the classroom, but he ignored her, and the two struggled for control of the door. The teacher blocked the doorway but Benjamin lowered his shoulder and charged into her in an attempt to get out of the classroom.
He told police later that he was trying to confront another student in the hallway.
A school resource officer, who is also a Lafayette policeman, made the arrest.
