Louisiana man accuseding of trying to rape his 12-year-old cousin
New Orleans police on Tuesday jailed an 18-year-old man accused of raping his 12-year-old cousin at a home in Broadmoor. The man was booked with one count of aggravated rape, which is punishable by mandatory life imprisonment upon conviction.
The Times-Picayune is not naming the man to protect the identity of the girl at the center of the case.
Police suspect that the man entered a room where the girl was lying in bed about 3 a.m. Tuesday and rubbed her rear end. He then pulled both of their pants down and attempted to penetrate girl from behind, which caused the girl discomfort, police allege in court documents.
The man left the room; and later in the day, the girl told her mother and her teacher what had allegedly occurred. The police were notified, and the 18-year-old was taken to headquarters for questioning, documents show.
The man said he was in the bedroom alone with the girl, and he was arrested, according to police. A New Orleans Criminal District Court magistrate set the defendant’s bail at $200,000 and ordered him to stay away from the girl.
In Louisiana, one of the definitions of aggravated rape involves the sexual abuse of anyone who is younger than 13 by anyone who is older than 17.
