Indictments against Laura Smith, 22, and Landon Broussard, 21, were handed up Wednesday night.
Broussard is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Julian Madera. Smith his charged with being a principal to first degree murder.
The prosecution has not yet decided whether to pursue the death penalty.
Both suspects are in custody at Lafayette Parish Correction Center. Broussard is being held without bail, Smith’s bond is set at $500,000.
Wednesday’s indictment represents the first significant court development in Julian’s Nov. 29 killing, which prosecutors said marked the end of a trail of severe abuse.
Julian was unresponsive when first responders were called to Broussard’s grandmother’s home on Kaliste Saloom Road just before 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 29. Emergency technicians were unable to revive the boy, and he died on the way to the hospital.
The coroner found that Julian suffered blunt force trauma all over his body and ruled his death a homicide.
