Black Lafayette Police Officer target of investigation as a result of BIA article
According to a senior law enforcement official who wishes not to be identified, Chief James ‘Jim’ Craft with the Lafayette City Police Department has ordered an internal investigation against a black police officer as a result of an article we published back on February 26th, 2013.
The article was regarding an incident with a group of officers at an off-duty police officers home earlier this year that no other media entity covered.
We encourage you to read about these LPD officer’s shenannigan’s here.
The senior law enforcement official said the officer under investigation is suspected of leaking confidential information to Busted In Acadiana.
Another law enforcement official provided us with the following memo issued by Chief Craft on March 8th, 2013 as a result of our February 26th, 2013 article:
Craft’s Email Memo Reads:
All Police and Civilian Personnel
We continue to experience problems with the release of confidential information to local websites including, “Busted In Acadiana.” The release of information from this department without authorization is a violation of LPD General Orders 305.1 (Public Information Officer).
Recently information was released regarding a disturbance call involving a Lafayette Police Offficer. The release of details of this incident hampers investigative efforts to sort out what exactly occurred ad can prejudice an investigation. This is a very important matter and is certainly unfair to the officer who is being investigated.
I want to remind you that everyone is entitled to a fair and unbiased inquiry regarding possibly violations of departmental policy. In addition, I would remind you that these types of violations are a category (3) violation which could result in termination.
Before releasing information that is confidential or that you are not authorized to release, please consider the harm, caused to the employee(s) and the department as a whole.
We are sorting through some additional information recently shared with us by another law enforcement official as well and will have additional updates to this story and possible another one in the coming weeks. <3 BIA
