Three charged with battery of an officer after hotel altercation
According to The Advertiser, a man, his wife and son were arrested Sunday at a local hotel after an altercation with hotel staff and responding officers.
On Sunday, officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to a hotel in the 2100 block of NE Evangeline Thruway in regards to a verbal dispute between a family and hotel staff according to the paper.
Terrell J. Scherer, 51, and Gage Ryan Scherer, 18, reportedly were shouting profane language at the officers and hotel staff, and refused numerous orders to stop. Terrell Scherer became “increasingly belligerent toward officers” investigating the incident, according to the paper.
Officers told Gage Scherer if he did not stop shouting and walk away, he would be placed under arrest. Gage Scherer then reportedly said another profanity to the officers before running into the hotel room.
Officers went to the hotel room and attempted to handcuff Gage Scherer, who, according to the affidavit, refused to turn and place his hands behind his back.
According to the affidavit, Gage Scherer clenched his fists and pushed an officer back. After a brief struggle on the ground, officers gained control of Gage Scherer and placed him in a police car, where he began to “violently strike his head against the steel window protecting bars.”
As officers executed the arrest on Gage Scherer, Terrell Scherer exited the hotel room. When officers told Scherer to move so an arrest could be made on his son, Scherer “clinched his fist in anaggressive manner and when told to calm down he suddenly struck a supervisor by pushing him with both hands and forcing the supervisor back,” the affidavit reads.
“The accused refused to comply with commands and was struck with a hard empty hand which caused him to fall,” according to the affidavit. Terrell Scherer reportedly continued to resist arrest and was secured in handcuffs after a Taser was deployed.
As officers attempted to make the arrest on Terrell Scherer, his wife, Angela Lynn Scherer, 42, grabbed one officer by the arm and shirt collar, attempting to pull the officer away from her husband, the affidavit states.
Angela Scherer then reportedly refused to back up and engaged an officer a second time. Officers were able to control the situation, and Angela Scherer was also placed under arrest.
Terrell Scherer is charged with battery on an officer, loud and profane language, and resisting an officer with force or violence. Angela Scherer is charged with battery on an officer, and loud and profane language. Gage Scherer is charged with battery on an officer, loud and profane language, resisting an officer with force or violence, and self mutilation of a prisoner.
