Student arrested for packing heat at school
On February27, at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer at Washington-Marion High School in Lake Charles responded to a report of a student in possession of firearm on school campus.
Through the investigation, deputies learned a 16 year old male student, who had not been at school since December, threw a backpack and jacket he was carrying to fellow student Shaiqwan Marshall, 17, when confronted by school officials.
A handgun was found in the backpack when it was searched. When questioned by deputies, both the 16 year old and Marshall denied ownership of the handgun.
Further investigation revealed student Ray J. Murray, 17, 2012 9thStreet, Lake Charles, was seen giving the backpack to the 16 year old juvenile earlier on campus.
The 16 year old juvenile and Murray were arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property. Murray was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. The 16 year old juvenile was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
Marshall is charged with obstruction of justice and was released on a misdemeanor summons.
