New Orleans police said an officer was shot several times Saturday morning near the Bywater neighborhood according to WDSU.
Police department spokesman Garry Flot said the officer was responding to a call of a robbery at a Dollar General store in the 1100 block of Poland Avenue about 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
In a news conference Saturday morning, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Ronal Serpas said the officer was in serious condition.
“He’s under medical care, and we’re going to keep looking until we find the person who did this,” he said.
Police said they are looking for an African-American man in his 30s to 40s, standing about 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing blue jeans, a gray hooded-sweatshirt, a hat and a blue and white bandanna.
Police said after the shooting at the store, the man fled. Members of the New Orleans Police Department SWAT team were in the area, combing the neighborhood for the suspect.
Serpas thanked a former police officer in the store who rushed to the officer’s side after he was injured and notified police that the officer was down.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911 and notify authorities.
