For starters, our hearts and prayers go out to the families affected by this tragedy along with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Louisiana State Police, officers responded to a fire on Flatown Road in Charenton at about 11:00pm this morning. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but based on information that continues to be released, it appears the suspect may have started the fire.

Upon arrival, three officers were shot at by an unidentified armed suspect. One Chitimacha Police has died as a result of his injuries and two St. Mary Parish Sheriffs deputies are in critical condition.

KATC identified one of the injured St. Marty Sheriff’s Deputies as Officer Matthew Strickland. Officer Strickland was shot several times in the neck and face area and was transported to a trauma center in New Orleans according to the station. Officer Strickland’s family told the station that he just begun patrolling the streets of St. Mary Parish two weeks prior after working in the parish jail and a tour in Iraq while serving in the Louisiana National Guard.

The identities of the two other officers won’t be released till Monday according to Louisiana State Police.

According to KLFY, another body was found with a gunshot wound behind the mobile home that was set on fire.

A suspect was taken into custody and identified as Wilbur Thibodeaux. Police say Thibodeaux was shot at the scene, although the extent of his injuries are unknown.

We have received numerous unconfirmed reports that the Thibodeaux was seen walking around prior to the shooting with a gas can and what appeared to be a shot gun in hand, however police are releasing very few details at this point.

We ask that you keep the officer and deputies families in your thoughts and prayers.

We will have more information later today.
