Who Got Busted?

Gregory NewtonEarlier this morning, Kentwood Police Department Chief Gregory Newton surrendered himself to Louisiana State Police Detectives following an investigation into missing evidence.

Newton (59 years old of Kentwood, LA) was placed under arrest charged with one count each of Malfeasance in Office and Obstruction of Justice through the tampering of evidence.

The investigation began in December of 2012 when Louisiana State Police Region I Detectives received a citizen complaint alleging that approximately $2000 in currency had been misappropriated by the Kentwood Police Department. The currency had been submitted to the department as evidence following its recovery from a residential burglary investigation. Through the course of the investigation, Troopers discovered that Newton was the sole guardian of the missing evidence and was responsible for its misuse. LSP investigators concluded that Newton intentionally tampered with the evidence constituting malfeasance and subsequently obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Newton was booked without incident into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail with a $50,000 bond.

Anyone wishing to report criminal or suspicious activity to the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations is urged to contact detectives at 225-925-3682.
