From the Louisiana State Police, last night, Detectives with Louisiana State Police were requested by the Breaux Bridge Police Chief to investigate a shooting involving one of his officers.
On December 2, 2012, at about 7:40 p.m., Officers with the Breaux Bridge Police Department were dispatched to a disturbance in the 900 block of Landry Street in Breaux Bridge. As the Officers were arriving on the scene a 17-year-old female Darnesha Harris of Breaux Bridge, was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla toward their unit. Harris struck the front of the Officers unit with the vehicle she was driving, then she placed the vehicle in reverse and struck a parked car on the roadway. After hitting the parked car Harris drove forward, traveled through a ditch, struck a bystander and a parked car in a driveway.
One of the responding Officers exited his vehicle and discharged his weapon striking Harris. Harris was transported to a local hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries.
The bystander was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
This case remains under investigation.
After completing the investigation, Detectives will forward their findings to the 16th Judicial District Attorney for review.
