The Lafayette Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the death of a three-year-old boy Lafayette boy.
Deputies were called to a home on Kaliste Saloom Road early this week in the mid-morning hours where they found Julian Madera in “grave conditon.”
Deputies say Julian was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later
The death has been ruled a homicide, but investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how he died.
The little boy’s mother, Laura Smith, has been charged with Principle to First Degree Murder.
Her boyfriend, Landon Broussard, has been charged with first degree murder.
Broussard was the one taking care of Julian yesterday morning. He said a heavy door fell on Julian, knocking him unconscious.
Authorities say they did find a door off of the hinges, but they say the little boy’s injuries are not consistent with that story.
A family of Smith tells us she had taken the child from her Smith for a few weeks after Broussard had previously abused the little boy. However, Smith arrived and threatened to contact police and have them arrested for kidnapping. Smith also told the family member she had contacted law enforcement of Broussard for for previous abuse and was not going back to him. We’re told most of Smith’s family had been trying to get her to leave Broussard in an effort to protect her son.
Julian Madera would have been four in January.
