Who Got Busted?

A man is back behind bars at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center after he escaped early Friday morning and stole an ambulance to get away.

Joshua Kelly, 38, worked as an infirmary orderly at EHCC and was part of a group of offenders working on a night cleaning crew.

Reports are that Kelly overpowered the correctional officer/EMT on duty. Kelly then partially disguised himself as a correctional officer by putting on a uniform jacket. He then drove an EHCC ambulance out of the facility.

The correctional officer was not seriously injured.

Several local law enforcement agencies assisted DOC in the search and apprehension, including the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Police Department, St. Gabriel Police Department, Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police.

Kelly was safely taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. Friday in Ascension Parish at the intersection of Highways 73 and 75.

In a news release from the La. Department of Public Safety and Corrections, DPS&C Secretary Jimmy Le Blanc says “There are still unanswered questions regarding the escape that will be revealed once our investigation is complete. As per Department policy, we will do a thorough review of the incident to determine exactly how this happened and take appropriate measures as warranted.”

Kelly was serving a 65-year sentence for armed robbery convictions.
