Who Got Busted?

According to The Town Talk, a Louisiana man accused of beheading and dismembering his disabled 7-year-old son is scheduled for a two-day sanity hearing in November rather than a one-day hearing this week.

Jeremiah Wright, 31, of Thibodaux has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the first-degree murder of Jori Lirette, who had cerebral palsy, had little speech, used a wheelchair and had to be fed through a tube. The boy was killed Aug. 14, 2011, and his head put in the front yard of the house where Wright lived with Jori’s mother, Jesslyn Lirette.

The hearing originally was scheduled for Friday. It was rescheduled in August for Nov. 26-27, defense attorney Kerry Cuccia said today.

“The issue is not about his mental condition at the time of the offense,” Cuccia said.

He said the only question before Judge John E. LeBlanc will be whether Wright now has the mental ability to go to trial. That could include whether he can understand the charge against him and help with his defense. Cuccia wouldn’t say what issues he plans to bring up.

Police have said Wright waived his right to an attorney and confessed the same day. According to a sworn police statement, Wright said signs — including being defecated and urinated on that morning — made him realize that he was living with a CPR dummy rather than his son. Throughout the statement, he referred only to “the dummy”.

He also told police that he and Jesslyn Lirette had fought the evening before, and that she had told him she was getting her truck to move him out of the house.
